Note:
Candle light is planned for Decemebr 10, the
International Day for Human Rights, to denounce
honor killing and pay tributes to Harwinder
Singh Saroya, recent victim of honor killing in
Punjab. It will be at the Surrey's Holland Park
on King George, Surrey. All are invited to
attend.
On Decemeber 6, patrons of Dr. Ambedkar gathered
at the Surrey Central Library and paid tributes
to Dr. Ambedkar on his death anniversary. Those
in presence also denounced the practice of honor
killing in India and observed one-minute silence
in memory of Jaswinder Singh Saroya, the most
recent victim of such an heinous practice.
Special guests at the ceremony were Jas Cheema,
library board chair, and Cindy Hill, Director
with the Surrey Libraries. The tribute ceremony
was organized by Chetna Association of Canada.
Dr. Ambedkar was remembered for dedicating his
entire life to pave the level playing ground for
eradicating the practice of caste system in
India.
After the ceremony, some members met and
discussed the recent killing of Harwinder Singh
Saroya, whose funeral was held in his home
village on Tuesday, December 6, the day of Dr.
Ambedkar's death anniversary. Althpough the
Punjab police has now laid charges against the
alleged murderers, there is no evidence of any
one having been arrested as of this time.
To pay tributes to Harwinder Singh Saroya and
further denounce the practice of honor killing,
plans are made to organize a peaceful
candlelight vigil at the Surrey's Holland Park
on King George Blvd and 100 avenue.
The candle light vigil be at 4:00 PM and
everyone who believes in having a casteless
society and denounces honor killing is invited
to take part in the candle light vigil.
